In some regards, his military career contained many of the events given in this book. Like Tom Shipley, he started his career as a Private soldier, having volunteered after being deferred from National Service. Later, he attended the Officer Cadet Training Unit and was Commissioned into the Infantry as a Second Lieutenant. During his military career, he also studied at university part time and obtained a Bachelor of Science degree and later Masters' Degrees in Science and Educational Administration and a Doctorate in Education. In 1988, he joined the Australian Naval Cadets and wore a Naval Lieutenant's uniform for twelve years. Trained in 'Tall Ships', he was Commanding Officer of Training Ship Magnus, Australian Naval Cadets.
