Jane Addams (1860–1935) was an American social reformer, social worker, philosopher, and activist in the women’s suffrage movement. In 1899, she cofounded, with Ellen Gates Starr in Chicago, Hull House, the first settlement in the United States, as well as the American Civil Liberties Union in 1920. She was awarded the Nobel Prize for Peace in 1931 for her work in social reform. She is the author of two memoirs, Twenty Years at Hull-House (1910) and The Second Twenty Years at Hull-House (1930).Henry Steele Commager (1902–1998) was a historian and widely regarded as an expert on US constitutional law and politics. He taught history at New York University, Columbia University, and Amherst College. A prolific author, Commager’s most influential works include The American Mind: An Interpretation of American Thought and Character Since the 1880s and Empire of Reason: How Europe Imagined and America Realized the Enlightenment.
