Cleanness, both in the sense of a neoclassical stylistic purity and of an individual moral and political probity, was centrally important to Walter Savage Landor's writing, both in his prose and poetry. Adam Roberts is Professor of Nineteenth-Century Literature at Royal Holloway, University of London. He has published widely on Romantic and Victorian topics, and recently edited Coleridge's Biographia Literaria (Edinburgh University Press, 2014). He has also published fourteen novels and various short stories.
