It is based on a famous anecdote of the time and tells the story of Mr. Meeson, the wealthy proprietor of a publishing house, and a young writer named Augusta Smithers. Smithers boards a steamer bound for New Zealand in an attempt to make a new start - only to find that her nemesis is on the same ship. After a collision with another boat, Augusta, Meeson and numerous other survivors wash up on a deserted island in the Indian Ocean.
