He was born in Seattle, Washington, and has lived and worked in Tamil Nadu, India, and Oaxaca, Mexico. His books include Give, Eat, and Live: Poems of Avvaiyar and Body and Earth: Notes from a Conversation (written with the artist C.F. John).
