The Bible Retold as Science

All religions are attempts to understand the world we live in and our own place within it. Science does much the same thing. The Bible was written as a handbook to understand nature and, in its own day, and its own way, did so with great success. All religions are attempts to understand the world we live in and our own place within it. Science does much the same thing. The Bible was written as a handbook to understand nature and, in its own day, and its own way, did so with great success. From the origin of the universe to that of humankind to the nature of sex, age and death, the Good Book posed many of the questions that scientists study today. As a result, the double helix and the mushroom cloud have joined the Cross, the Crescent and the Star of David as global icons. Science is built on fact, rather than faith; and has supplemented many of the mystical explanations put forth in scripture with others based on banal, but often fascinating, reality. In The Serpent's Promise, Steve Jones retells many of the Biblical tales in the light of modern science. Are we all descended from a real-life Adam and Eve? Are some - or all - of us marked with the molecular equivalent of original sin, and if so what can we do about it? Was the Bible's great flood a memory of the end of the Ice Age? Will we get back to Methuselah given that life expectancy is now rising by six hours a day, every day? And what can science tell us of the mystical experiences reported by the faithful, or of the origin of faith itself? Some people deny the power of religious belief, others the findings of science. In this ground-breaking work from one of our great science popularisers, Jones explores how their mysteries do, and do not, overlap. He steps aside from the noisy debate between believers and non-believers to show how the questions that preoccupy today are those of biblical times - and that science offers many of the answers. Brilliantly erudite and accessible, The Serpent's Promise is a witty and thoughtful account of the ability and the limits of science to tell us what we are.
