I Heard and Saw before I Knew
As a young woman, Pauline Zimmerman embarked on a journey to make sense of a childhood dominated by a cruel, controlling father, clouded by parental conflict and haunted, for her and her four siblings, by physical, mental, sexual and emotional abuse which went unacknowledged and unchallenged for years. Understanding how abuse within the family happens and why, and how to help sufferers deal with it, has been her life's work; she became a respected specialist in adult psychiatric and mental health nursing. If you want to understand domestic abuse, this book is for you.

Über den Autor
Pauline's work took her to Jamama, Somalia, Africa, to be administrator of Nursing Program and to provide leadership in the hospital with other persons from America and Africa. She delivered babies, diagnosed illness, prescribed medications and taught Pediatrics and Nursing Arts. She created a new nursing program which was a change from a Practical Nursing level to a Registered Nursing level. She worked in a Missionary school in Kenya for six months after Garissa, and then went to America and worked at the Lancaster Regional Hospital again. This time in the Medical-Surgical nursing while living with her parents. She went back to Africa again but this time in Northeast Providence, in Kenya. She was responsible for the oversight of three hospitals: Garissa, Wajir and Mandiera. In America, she resumed working at Lancaster Regional Hospital as a rehabilitation nurse. She injured her back lifting patients, so she changed jobs and went into Public Health Nursing. It was there that she came to believe that counseling was for her and applied for the Master's Nursing Program at the University of Pennsylvania, which also taught skills for counseling. She went into the Master's Program in 1983 and graduated in 1984, qualifying for counseling, which she enjoyed very much. She started counseling people who were obese and then developed her skills for other areas of interest such as Marriage and Family Therapy. She went to Marriage Council of Philadelphia to get the necessary course work to get it.
