MARGARET SUPPLEE SMITH is professor of art at Wake Forest University. She coordinated the North Carolina Women's History Project for the North Carolina Museum of History. EMILY HERRING WILSON is author of No One Gardens Alone: A Life of Elizabeth Lawrence. She lives in Winston-Salem.
