The events in this novel take place during the last few weeks of the Anglo-Boer War. A small group of Boer soldiers departs from the Colony to the Free State to take a traumatised young man back to his home. Two of the men, Reitz Steyn and Ben Maritz, are scientists, and the novel focuses on their experiences. The suffering and hardships of the war left its mark on this little group, and especially Reitz and Ben are increasingly aware of the futility of it all. Über den Autor
Ingrid Winterbach's novels have won many awards: the M-Net Prize four times; the prestigious Hertzog Prize twice (in 2004 for the Afrikaans edition of this novel and 2013); the W.A. Hofmeyr Prize, UJ Prize (twice). Her latest novel, Die aanspraak van lewende wesens (2012) has already been awarded five of the most important literary prizes in Afrikaans. Two of her novels have been published in the Netherlands and three in the USA, where they were received exceptionally well. The Elusive Moth will be published in France. Winterbach is also an artist. She lives in Stellenbosch.
