Joel Benton (1832-1911) wrote this biography about one of America's most famous 19th century showmen. Barnum is probably best known for founding the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus. Barnum was a businessman whose profession was entertainment. He was the first millionaire in the field. Barnum was involved in the politics surrounding race, slavery, and sectionalism just before the Civil War. Barnum claimed to hate politics but Barnum was elected to the Connecticut legislature in 1865. He was mayor of Bridgeport, Connecticut and worked vigorously to improve the city water supply, bring gaslighting to the streets, and strictly enforce liquor and prostitution laws. Barnum helped found the Bridgeport Hospital 1878, and served as its first president.
