Porter, Steward, Citizen
An African American's Memoir of World War I
In 1919, Royal Christian privately published a memoir based on his experiences in World War I as a professional valet for Colonel Moorhead C. Kennedy in Paris and London. This narrative is a unique contribution to the history of African American men in WWI. However, the book has been lost to public knowledge for almost a century.
