From the critique of 'the medical model' of disability undertaken during the early and mid-1990s, a 'social model' emerged, particularly in the caring professions and those trying to shape policy and practice for people with disability. In education and schooling, it was a period of cementing inclusive practices and the 'integration' and inclusion of disability into 'mainstream'. Anna Hickey-Moody is a lecturer in Gender and Cultural Studies at The University of Sydney, Australia. She is the author of Unimaginable Bodies (2009) and Youth, Arts and Education (forthcoming in 2012), and co-author of Masculinity Beyond the Metropolis (2006).Vicki Crowley is Senior Lecturer at the School of Communication Languages and International Studies, University of South Australia, teaching in gender studies and cultural and communication studies. She has contributed chapters to Cultural Theory and Everyday Practice (2008) and Vibrant (2007).
