Anna Deavere Smith is an actor, a teacher, a playwright, and the creator of an acclaimed series of one-woman plays based on her interviews with diverse voices from communities in crisis. She is the founder and director of The Institute on the Arts and Civic Dialogue at Harvard University, and is the Ann O'Day Maples Professor of the Arts at Stanford University. Her works include Twilight: Los Angeles, 1992 and Fires in the Mirror, and she has written for Newsweek and The New Yorker, among other publications. She lives in San Francisco.
