Silicon-Based Photonics

Ebook (EPUB Format)

Silicon photonics has evolved rapidly as a research topic with enormous application potential. The high refractive index contrast of silicon-on-insulator (SOI) shows great promise for submicron waveguide structures suited for integration on the chip scale in the near-infrared region. Ge- and GeSn-Si heterostructures with different elastic strain levels already provide expansion of the spectral range, high-speed operation, efficient modulation and switching of optical signals, and enhanced light emission and lasing. This book focuses on the integration of heterostructure devices with silicon photonics. The authors have attempted to merge a con… Mehr

Über den Autor

Erich Kasper obtained his PhD in physics from the University of Graz, Austria. From 1971 to 1993, he worked in the research institutes of Telefunken, AEG, and Daimler Benz, Germany, where he led research on silicon-based devices and technologies. He joined the University of Stuttgart, Germany, as professor in 1993. From 1993 to 2008, he was head of the Institute of Semiconductors, University of Stuttgart. He was also guest professor at HUST, China, and guest lecturer at MU Leoben, Austria, and he coordinated interdisciplinary research projects on behalf of the German Research Council until 2016. Dr. Kasper has coauthored more than 500 peer-reviewed papers and edited many books. His current research interests focus on benefits of Ge/Si heterostructures for high-quantum-efficiency photovoltaics and energy harvesting, millimeter-wave imaging and near-field radar for medical applications, primary building blocks and integration concepts for silicon-based photonics, and infrared vision for automotive purposes and climate research.Jinzhong Yu is professor in the University of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, China. He graduated from the University of Science and Technology of China in 1965 and received his PhD in engineering from Osaka University, Japan, in 1991. From 1965 to 2008, he was with the Institute of Semiconductors, Chinese Academy of Sciences. He has received various awards from the State and the Chinese Academy of Sciences, including the Teaching Model in University of Chinese Academy of Sciences in 2018. He has also written a few books, such as Semiconductor Photonics and Semiconductor Optoelectronics Technology, in Chinese and more than 400 papers. Prof. Yu has long been engaged in semiconductor photonics research and has led key projects on the study of III-V compound lasers and Si-based optical waveguides and photonic integration.
