Mastering Endocrinology and Diabetes

Dr Maralyn Druce undertook undergraduate training at Christ's College, Cambridge University, with a first class honours degree in Natural Sciences. She completed her clinical training at UCLSM in 1994, with distinctions in all subjects. She completed her higher medical training in Diabetes, Endocrinology and General Internal Medicine at the Hammersmith Hospital and Barts Hospital. She was awarded a Wellcome Trust clinical research training fellowship and obtained a PhD in physiology in Professor Steve Bloom's laboratory in Imperial College, focusing on gut hormones and their role in the peripheral and central control of energy homeostasis. She went on to be awarded the Chadburn Lectureship at Barts and the London School of Medicine. She is now Clinical Reader in Endocrine Medicine and Consultant in Endocrinology at Barts and the London NHS Trust. Summary of ResearchShe has multiple peer reviewed publications in physiology and clinical endocrinology.Her current research interests include:? Pathophysiology, diagnosis and treatment of neuroendocrine tumours including fibrosis in the carcinoid syndrome, the use of targeted radionuclide therapy in the treatment of endocrine malignancy and the diagnosis and localisation of insulinoma. She is also involved in industry-sponsored clinical trials of novel pharmacological therapies.? Factors affecting the production of catecholamines and metanephrines.? Endocrine effects of cancer therapies.? Gut hormones in the pathophysiology and treatment of obesity. Summary of Teaching? She was initiator of and is programme director for the Postgraduate diploma / MSc programme in Endocrinology and Diabetes Mellitus.
