The issue of self/non-self discrimination amongst lymphocytes is of vital importance in our understanding of the basic processes of immune recognition. Over the past decades there have been considerable advances in our knowledge of the role of the thymus in educating T cells to distinguish self from non-self, and recently there has been a greater appreciation of the importance of immunological tolerance in the periphery during the development of immune responses.
