The study of 'divided societies' has focused, historically, on either ethnic divides in colonial (or post-colonial) societies or on developed Western democracies which have ethnic power-sharing Government structures. Chris Gilligan is a Senior Lecturer in Sociology at the University of the West of Scotland and is Reviews Editor for the journal Ethnopolitics. He has edited collections on the peace process in Northern Ireland, and on migration.Susan Ball is Senior Lecturer in Contemporary British Civilisation at the University of Paris 8, France. Susan has undertaken research in the U.K. and France on socio-economic and ethnic segregation, discrimination and integration, and urban policy and real estate investment.
