SAMUEL R. WILLIAMSON, Jr is President and Vice-Chancellor of The University of the South, Sewanee, and a member of the International Institute for Strategic Studies. His study The Politics of Grand Strategy: Britain and France Prepare for War, 1904-1914 (1969) won the George Louis Beer Prixe of the American Historical Association, and he has published widely on the origins of the First World War.
