Separate but integrated books for spoken and written Chinese allow more flexible and efficient learning. Most books teach oral and written skills at the same rate. However due to the difficulty of learning the Chinese characters, most people can learn to speak Chinese much faster than they can learn to read and write it. This series allows total flexibility in learning spoken and written Chinese at rates appropriate to each learner. This book discusses specific challenges faced by English speakers when learning Chinese. Most others were written by native Chinese-speaking authors with little sensitivity to the difficulties faced by their non-Chinese students. This book addresses these difficulties head-on and helps learners to overcome them. Chinese accents and speaking styles in different regions are as numerous and as varied as the different styles of spoken English. (Think of the difference between a Scottish accent, an Irish accent, a London accent, a New York accent and a Texas accent, and you begin to understand just how different the various Chinese speaking styles are!) This book presents not just standard Beijing Mandarin, but many other styles of spoken Mandarin from around the Chinese-speaking world. A software disc with approx. 6 hours of audio was shot on location and provides audio and video recordings of over 100 different Chinese speakers in different parts of mainland China as well as Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan, Singapore and Malaysia.
