William Harrison Ainsworth (1805-82) was an English historical novelist born in Manchester. He first trained as a lawyer but found the legal profession held no attraction for him. After briefly trying the publishing business, he devoted himself to journalism and literature, his first success as a writer coming with the publication of Rookwood in 1834 which featured Dick Turpin as its leading character. 39 further novels followed, the last appearing in 1881, the year before his death. The Star-Chamber, first published in two volumes in 1854, is an historical romance/thriller set in England during the reign of James I. At its centre is the evil and all-powerful villain Sir Giles Mompesson who dishes out suffering and destruction through the notorious Star-Chamber court. The young hero of the story is Jocelyn Mounchensey, whose father died a victim of Mompesson's wicked judgment, who later defeats Mompesson in a tournament and is arrested by him with a view to being brought before the Star-Chamber. Interspersed with the main plot are court intrigues and poisonings, alongside Jocelyn's budding romance with Aveline. Mompesson finally gets his just deserts when he is killed by Jocelyn's uncle who has disguised himself as a servant, waiting to take revenge for his brother's death at Mompesson's hands.
