'Faced with the prospect of death [he has] produced a great testament of faith and humanity...Tony Judt's dying words make the connection between memory and society' Fintan O'Toole, Observer, Books of the YearThe Memory Chalet is a memoir unlike any you have ever read before. Each essay charts some experience of remembrance of the past through the sieve of Tony Judt's prodigious mind. His love of a particular bus route evolves into a reflection on public civility, memories of the 1968 student riots meander through the sexual politics of Europe, a series of roadtrips across America lead not just to an appreciation of American history but to an eventual acquisition of citizenship. And everything is as simply and beautifully arranged as a Swiss chalet - a reassuring refuge deep in the mountains of memory. 'This book is simultaneously awe-inspiring and almost too painful to bear...His head, that of a great historian, political writer and charismatic intellectual, was a treasure house' Diana Athill, Literary Review 'Quintessential Judt: humane, fearless, unsparingly honest' Financial Times'The qualities of courage, incisive irony, keen humour and a potent but, far from overwhelming, melancholy make this memoir so remarkable' Jane Shilling, Daily Telegraph
