William Cooper was the founder and leader of the Australian Aborigines League, formally constituted in 1936. This was the most important of the first crop of Aboriginal political organizations formed in Australia. Mission-educated and influenced by Christianity, he worked as a laborer in several states in the early 20th Century. His later authority as a spokesman rested on these life experiences. One of Coopers important causes was petitioning King George V in September 1933 for Indigenous rights. Among his proposals was a call for parliamentary representation for Aborigines. An activist for many years, Cooper has long been remembered only by his own people, the Yorta Yorta. This book sets out to right that wrong.
