First published in 1997, this volume asks whether Africa's future is necessarily rooted in peasant agriculture. The title of this book, Farewell to Farms, is deliberately intended to challenge the widely held view that Africa is the world's reserve for peasant farming. African rural populations are themselves moving away from a reliance on agriculture. Über den Autor
Deborah Fahy Bryceson is a research fellow at the Afrika Studiecentrum in Leiden. Her research activities have concentrated on issues of food marketing, urbanisation, gender, and rural transport and mobility patterns. She is presently coordinating the De-Agrarianisation and Rural Employment Programme which is concerned with rural employment and land accessibility in Sub-Saharan Africa. Vali Jamal is an Industry Specialist for Agriculture, Plantations and other Rural Sectors at the International Labour Office in Geneva. Between 1976 and 1984 he was based in Addis Ababa with the ILO's regional employment team for Africa, Jobs and Skills for Africa, and between 1994 and June 1997 in Bangkok with the ILO's East Asia Multidisciplinary Advisory Team.
