Thomas Penson De Quincey (1785-1859) was an English essayist most famous for his autobiographical work Confessions of an English Opium-Eater (1821). It is due to the publication of this work that many believe De Quincey began the tradition of addiction literature in the Western world. Other notable works by this author include: On the Knocking at the Gate in Macbeth (1823) and Walladmor (1825). This classic work is being republished now in a modern, high-quality edition complete with a specially commissioned new biography of the author.
