Alexandre Dumas, known best as author of The Count of Monte Cristo and The Three Musketeers, explores in his romantic novel Amaury the general theme of jealousy, starting from the question: Do people die of love? The orphaned Amaury de Léoville is raised by Monsieur d'Avrigny, a friend of his late father, together with d'Avrigny's frail daughter, Madeleine, and the vigorous Antoinette, another orphan. Amaury has fallen in love with Madeleine, while both Madeleine and Antoinette have fallen in love with Amaury. With three illustrations by Gordon Browne.
