The competition over energy resources, and notably coal, exacerbated controversies over territorial divisions within Europe in the first half of the twentieth century. This work examines how France addressed its rivalry with Germany in the years following the two World Wars, first using force in the Ruhr valley, then through the supranational cooperation instituted by the European Coal and Steel Community.
