Images of violent black masculinity are not new in American culture, but in the late 1980s and early '90s, the social and economic climate in the country contributed to an unprecedented number of films about ghetto life. Celeste A. Fisher holds a Ph.D. in Culture and Communication from New York University. She sits on the advisory board of Inter-Cultural Studies, a journal of social change and cultural diversity, and has been a special issue editor for the International Journal of Media and Cultural Politics. She teaches film and media studies in New York City.
