Mark Radford explores whether the RIC, as the most public face of British government, was successful in controlling a recalcitrant Irish urban populace. The book concludes by showing how governmental neglect of the force and its failure to comprehensively address the issues of pay and conditions of service ultimately led to crisis in the RIC.

Mark Radford is a Tutor in the Department of Continuing Education at Oxford University, UK. He is a former member of the Regular British Army and Royal Ulster Constabulary, and has been granted the appointment of Honorary Colonel in the British Army Reserves and Cadets in recognition of his long-standing involvement.
