Chris Ofili began to garner attention in the mid-1990s with his intricately constructed works that combined beadlike dots of paint (informed in part by cave paintings in Zimbabwe) with collaged images from the popular media and varnished and adorned elephant dung --that same dung paired with a Madonna that so incensed former Mayor Rudolph Giuliani in 1999 and launched a dramatic series of protests and public outcries. Über den Autor
Chris Ofili was born in 1968 in Manchester, England and now lives and works in Trinidad. He studied at the Chelsea School of Art, London and the Royal College of Art, London. Past one-person exhibitions include The Blue Rider Extended Remix, Kestner Gesellschaft, Hannover, Germany (2006); The Upper Room, Tate Britain, London, England (2005); Afro Muses, The Studio Museum in Harlem, New York, NY (2005); and Within Reach, British Pavilion, 50th Venice Biennale, Venice, Italy (2003). Devil's Pie, the artist's debut solo exhibition at David Zwirner, New York in 2007 was the first to unite Ofili's work in painting, sculpture, printmaking, and graphite drawing.David Adjaye is an award-winning architect and founder of Adjaye/Associates. Thelma Golden is chief curator at the Sudio Museum in Harlem, New York. Kwui Enwezor is dean of academic affairs and senior vice president at the San Francisco Art Institiute.
