Jim Smith might be one of the few people that tried extending his tour in Vietnam and was actually forced to leave. As a correspondent for Stars and Stripes, the Defense Department's daily newspaper, he saw every major city in Vietnam from the Delta to the Demilitarized Zone from 1971 to 1972. Jim Smith has spent his life on ballfields, basketball courts and in his mancave assigning ball games to umpires and basketball officials. From his childhood in eastern North Carolina, to college at East Carolina University, and throughout his public school teaching career baseball was his passion. Now retired from both officiating personally several thousand contests and assigning an amazing 55,000 games, he shares his poignant and humorous stories with others who share his love of sports.
