Petlyakov's Pe-2 was the most numerous Soviet twin-engined bomber of World War 2, the aircraft being used as a dive-bomber, ground attack platform and dedicated reconnaissance type. The first examples entered service in August 1940, and by the time production came to end in late 1945, no fewer than 10,547 examples had been built. These equipped more than 80 bomber air regiments, and of the latter, two were accorded Guards Air Corps status, as were six air regiments. Dmitriy Khazanov is one of the most prolific Russian researchers when it comes to examining Soviet aviation history in World War 2. The author of 22 books and numerous articles, his work has appeared in Russia, the UK, Germany, Finland, France and Japan. Formerly a colonel in the Russian Air Force, Aleksander Medved is a specialist researcher in the field of aircraft armament. The author of 19 books and multiple articles on the history of World War 2 aircraft design and development, he has co-written volumes on the development and combat use of the MiG-3 fighter and Pe-2 and Er-2 bombers with Dmitriy Khazanov. Andrey Yurgenson is one of Russia's premier aviation artists, specialising in drawings and colour illustrations of Soviet aircraft. He has illustrated a numerous articles on the history of Russian aviation in Russian and foreign aviation magazines since the early 1990s.
