Mattie, the nine-year-old daughter of a Quaker woman and a Scottish highlander, gets caught up in the turmoil and uncertainties at the end of the Revolutionary War. Prayer does not bring her papa home or quiet her growing fears. Will she have to move away from her best friend? Will her old friend, the Patriot Captain, help her search for Papa when she shares the family secret? Mattie and her best friend follow a wilderness road in the Mohawk Valley on a dangerous quest to find Mattie's papa. This historical adventure is about a Loyalist girl whose stuggles are timeless-missing a parent, moving away from good friends, and trusting in God. Her story gives insight into Quaker religion, language, and thought, and touches on the contribution the Mohawks made to the British side of the war.
