At the beginning of the eleventh century, Catalonia was a patchwork of counties, viscounties, and lordships that bordered Islamic al-Andalus to the south. Over the next two centuries, the region underwent a dramatic transformation. Thomas W. Barton is Associate Professor of History at the University of San Diego. He is the author of Contested Treasure, which won the Best First Book Prize from the Association for Spanish and Portuguese Historical Studies and the Association for Jewish Studies' Jordan Schnitzer Prize for the Best Book on Medieval and Early Modern Jewish History and Culture.
