Mistral (1830-1914) was a French writer and lexicographer of the Occitan language, a Romance language spoken in Southern France, Italy's Occitan Valleys, Monaco and Spain's Val d'Aran, which regions are sometimes known collectively as Occitania. In 1904 he received the Nobel Prize in Literature in recognition of his ability to reflect the natural scenery and native spirit of his people and for his significant work as a Provencal philologist.
