Interrupting the Pots
The Excavation of Cleatham Anglo-Saxon Cemetery
The Cleatham, North Lincolnshire, Anglo-Saxon cemetery contained over 1200 cremations and 62 graves, making it England's third largest cemetery of the period. Burial took place over the whole of the Early Saxon period starting around the mid-5th century and ending with 'Final Phase' graves of the later 7th century. The most important feature of Cleatham was the intercutting of urns, making it possible to sequence them into five phases. This phasing was applied to the grave goods found within the urns, giving an insight into the sequence of metalwork, beads, combs and other artefacts. Further information will be available in an online database.
