After her mother's tragic death, Shayla is left to navigate her teenage years without the protective love of her mom. She has no choice but to be dependent on her neglectful, playboy father. After she is sexually abused by one of her nannies, Shayla's life spins out of control, and she engages in promiscuous and risky sexual behavior. Before she turns 18, Shayla lands a job as a waitress in one of Harlem's top strip clubs, where she learns to run scams on unsuspecting patrons. After she is raped and left for dead after work one night, she is too scared to tell the truth. She conspires with her best friend, and they lie to the police, to her father, and to the district attorney, in order to protect the strip club owner, who hires underage girls. A man is ultimately arrested, charged, and sent to jail for the rape, despite his insistence that he is innocent. With the help of a great mentor, Shayla is able to dramatically turn her life around. She graduates from Howard University, and with a career and success in front of her, she is ready to put her negative past behind her-until an unexpected twist turns her life upside down once again. With the advance of DNA technology, the man who was sent to prison convinces the court to take a second look at his conviction. Shayla is forced to confront the lies that she told and come face to face with some ugly demons.
