Rituals combining healing with spirit possession and court-like proceedings are found around the world and throughout history. For example, a person suffers from an illness that cannot be cured, and in order to be healed he performs a ritual involving prosecution and defense, a judge and witnesses. William S. ('Bo') Sax has taught at Harvard, Christchurch, and Heidelberg, where he is Chair of Cultural Anthropology at the South Asia Institute.Helene Basu studied social anthropology at the Free University Berlin where she earned a PhD in 1993. She is currently director of the Institute of Social Anthropology at Münster University.
