JAMES MARTINEAU (1805-1900) was a British religious philosopher, instrumental in the development of Unitarianism and Transcendentalism. He was the professor of mental and moral philosophy and political economy at the Manchester New College for almost 50 years. Martineau was an editor and contributor at several notable literary publications, and his works include Types of Ethical Theory, The Study of Religion, and The Seat of Authority in Religion.
