Eurochants
Testing some possibilities and limits of cultural and linguistic exchange, a selection of imitations of Max Jacob follow free improvisations on early Chinese love poems and texts by Persius, Tacitus and Villon. The Eurochants themselves are less translations of specific texts than plurilingual responses to aspects of the European lyric tradition with its characteristic themes of despair, frustration, yearning (Michael Riffaterre) that are by turns respectful and irreverent, attentive and oblique, measuring themselves against established forms-most frequently the sonnet-as they distort and resolve them. Über den Autor
First published by Eric Mottram in the Poetry Review in 1973, Adrian Clarke resurfaced on the London scene in the 1980s, publishing Reading Reverdy and Ghost Measures with Paul Brown's Actual Size Press and performing with Virginia Firnberg as StresS; he co-edited Floating Capital-New Poets from London with Robert Sheppard in 1991. A long association with Bob Cobbing and Writers Forum began at this time, which included co-editing And magazine from 1994. Since Cobbing's death in 2002 he has continued running the Writers Forum workshop with Lawrence Upton. His most recent collection was 'Possession' from Veer Books (2007). He is currently editing a selection of Jennifer Cobbing's visual work for the same publisher.
