T Cell Subsets in Infectious and Autoimmune Diseases
Mature T cells are classified on the basis of their surface marker proteins, such as CD4 and CD8. CD4+ and CD8+ cells recognize antigens associated with major histocompatibility complex class II and class I molecules, respectively, and they can both be further classified into subgroups. The division of CD4+ T cells into T helper 1 (Th1) and Th2 cells is based on the secretion of distinct patterns of cytokines, and the resulting polarized Th1 and Th2 responses play different roles in protection and the promotion of different immunopathological reactions.
