Phillips (1867-1911) was an American novelist and journalist of the muckraker tradition. He gained a degree from Princeton in 1887, worked for a time as a reporter in Cincinatti, then moved to New York where he became a columnist and editor with the New York World until 1902. He gained a degree from Princeton in 1887, worked for a time as a reporter in Cincinatti, then moved to New York where he became a columnist and editor with the New York World until 1902. His first novel was published in 1901 and the royalty income enabled him to work as a freelance journalist whilst continuing to write fiction. His articles appeared in various prominent magazines and he developed a reputation as a competent investigative journalist known for exposing corruption in the Senate and big business. In 1911 Phillips was shot and killed by a paranoid musician who falsely accused Phillips of misrepresenting his sister in one of his novels. This work was first published in 1905 and includes three illustrations within the text and reproductions of the original cover and title page.
