NORMAN DAVIES was for many years a professor of history at the University of London and also taught at Harvard, Stanford, Columbia, and McGill. He is the bestselling author of Vanished Kingdoms; No Simple Victory; Rising '44 (a New York Times Notable Book); The Isles: A History; and Europe: A History. He is now a professor at the Jagiellonian University at Cracow, an Honorary Fellow of St. Antony's College, Oxford, and a Fellow of the British Academy.
