There is increasing expectation on universities to do more than just teaching and research. Increasingly, universities are becoming agents in enhancing regional and national development. This has prompted a significant number of studies by regional governments, and universities themselves to assess the contribution of universities to their regions. Samuel Fongwa holds a B.A Hons in Development Studies and M.Ed in Higher Education Studies from the University of the Western Cape, South Africa. He has recently completed a PhD in Development Studies from the University of the Free State, South Africa. While awaiting graduation he works as researcher in higher education and human development.
