Forbiological macromolecules experimental phasing is one technique tosolve this phase problem; it usually requires the incorporation ofheavy atoms in the protein crystal.In this thesis a new class of compounds was developed that combinesheavy atoms for experimental phasing with functional groups for interactionwith biological macromolecules. Three functional groupsinteract with protein residues and make the compounds sticky. Threehalogen atoms provide a strong anomalous signal and may be usedfor experimental phasing. The halogen atoms form an equilateraltriangle, which is easily recognised in the heavy-atom substructure. So farseveral novel protein structures have been solved with the iodinetriangle compound. The sticky compounds of the current work arereadily available and easy to use.
