Later, he attended the Officer Cadet Training Unit and was Commissioned into the Infantry as a Second Lieutenant. During his military career, he also studied at university part time and obtained a Bachelor of Science degree and later Masters' Degrees in Science and Educational Administration and a Doctorate in Education. In 1988, he joined the Australian Naval Cadets and wore a Naval Lieutenant's uniform for twelve years.
