This work offers an extraordinary perspective on the early modern debates about toleration and the binding force of agreements between people of different Christian faiths. The Jesuit controversialist Martinus Becanus (1563-1624) was one of the most influential polemical authors of his time. He was professor of theology first at the Jesuit college in Mainz and then in Vienna. He finished his career as imperial court confessor.
