The idea for this volume originates from the first meeting of the International Society of Empirical Research in Theology (ISERT) in 2002 at the Radboud University Nijmegen. In this volume, researchers and academics from South Africa, Great Britain, Switzerland, Germany and the Netherlands debate about the fundamental question of the role of theological normativity in empirical research in theological fields. Johannes A. van der Ven, Ph.D. (1973) in Theology, Radboud University Nijmegen (The Netherlands), Honorary Doctor in Theology, University of Lund (Sweden), is Professor of Practical Theology and Empirical Theology at the Radboud University Nijmegen and extraordinary Professor at the University of South Africa, Pretoria, (South Africa). He has published: Practical Theology: An Empirical Approach (Peeters); Ecclesiology in Context (Eerdmans); Formation of the Moral Self (Eerdmans); Education for Reflective Ministry (Peeters). Michael Scherer-Rath, Ph.D. (2001) in Theology, is Assistant Professor of Practical Theology at the Radboud University Nijmegen. He has published on Pastoral Care and Counseling: The Images of Death as Perspectives in a Life Crises (2002).
