Marine Environmental Characterization

Buch

The use of environmental data to support science, technology, and marine operations has evolved dramatically owing to long-term ocean observatories, unmanned platforms, satellite and coastal remote sensing, data assimilative numerical models, and high-speed communications. Actionable environmental information is regularly produced and communicated from quality-controlled measurements and skillful forecasts. The characterization of complex oceanographic processes is more difficult compared to inland features because of the difficulty in obtaining observations from often remote and hazardous locations. Regardless, coastal and ocean engineering… Mehr

Über den Autor

C. Reid Nichols is the president of Marine Information Resources Corporation. He is a retired U.S. Marine Corps colonel with experience in military logistics and intelligence. His applied research interests include physical oceanography and providing environmental characterization to support researchers such as naval architects involved in testing innovative vessels, engineers involved in the development of oceanographic platforms, and operators interested in decision aid products that help protect property and save lives. He received his M.S. from North Carolina State University and an MBA from Loyola University Maryland and was a contributing author for Recent Advances and Issues in Oceanography, Encyclopedia of Marine Science, and Tomorrow's Coasts: Complex and Impermanent.Kaustubha Raghukumar is a physical oceanographer with Integral Consulting, Inc. His re-search has focused on modeling ocean ecosystems such as the California Current System using data-constrained physical circulation estimates and validation testing of innovative instruments such as the Spotter, an easily deployed solar powered wave buoy. He received his M.S. from the New Jersey Institute of Technology and a Ph.D. from University of California San Diego.
