DNA damage is a fairly common event and, if left unrepaired, can lead to genomic instability, a hallmark of cancer cells. My Ph.D. work, described in this thesis, has focused primarily on elucidating how cells combat DNA damage to maintain genomic integrity. Michael Chang is currently an Assistant Professor at the European Research Institute for the Biology of Ageing within the University of Groningen and the University Medical Center Groningen (the Netherlands). His research group studies telomere maintenance and genome integrity as it relates to cancer and aging.
