Expansive soils are highly problematic by virtue of their innate capacity to undergo volume changes such as swelling and shrinkage respectively corresponding to water absorption and water evaporation. This alternate swelling and shrinkage causes distress in the structural members of lightly loaded civil engineering infrastructure such as buildings, pavements and canal linings.
